              Overcoming Anxiety and Depression

              Picture
Almost everyone is sad or anxious at times, but when you're sad or anxious all the time, or when it stops you from having the life you want to live, then something more serious is going on.  Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in America. 13.3% of adult Americans currently struggle with anxiety.  Seven percent of people will suffer with major depression some time in their lives. Fortunately much is known about these conditions and quality therapy can make a difference

Many people have trouble explaining how intense and debilitating their depression or anxiety is to their family and friends. Being able to talk freely about anxiety and depression in therapy can be liberating all by itself.  I also employ a combination of methods with my clients including Mindfulness-based techniques, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Existential Therapy to help clients get relief from their anxiety and depression and put the focus back on enjoying everyday life.

Many people who see me about depression and anxiety want to know about medication. Some clients do benefit from medication and some clients really need antidepressants or anti-anxiety medicine. At the same time, these drugs have serious side-effects. My personal bias is to avoid medication if possible.  However I am willing and able to refer clients to competent psychiatrists in the area. In the end, you, the client, always have the final say whether to begin taking medication.
